About the instructor:
Kat Cearns is a multidisciplinary artist based in Coombs. Her art career has a focus on whimsical illustrations featuring animals and nature inspired by her Vancouver Island home. Kat is currently working towards a BA of Visual Arts at VIU and loves every opportunity to learn a new art skill or to dig deeper to build on her existing skill set. Her love of making art of all kinds and learning new things is turning her eye towards teaching young people to embrace their creativity, too. Artist Bio
Kat Cearns is a visual artist living and working on the traditional territory of the Qualicum First
Nation, Snuneymuxw, and K’òmoks Coast Salish peoples on Central Vancouver Island. Growing
up and living on Vancouver Island has instilled in her a great appreciation for the natural world
that is reflected in her work. Using a variety of media, she focuses on colour, movement, and
light to create a story in each image she creates.
Kat has been creative throughout her entire life, and for the past fifteen years she has focused
on making a career through practice and education. In 2023 she completed a life-changing artist
residency, Almost Perfect, in Tokyo. Going forward she intends to seek opportunities in
illustration, residencies in Canada and abroad, as well as creating personal bodies of work in
painting and illustration. Most recently, Kat worked with Victoria publisher Heritage House in
illustrating a 32-page children’s book which will be released September 22, 2026.
Since 2025, Kat has taught youth art classes and camps at the McMillan Arts Centre in Parksville.
She takes great pleasure and pride in encouraging and fostering creative pursuits in the next
generation. Creating and sharing art is her purpose, and she intends to make it her lifetime
pursuit.
