Ocean's Reflections: Sheri Peters

Ocean's Reflections: Sheri Peters

“Ocean’s Reflections” is an interpretation on the interaction between animals, seasonal changes, and observations on coastal shores. The ocean is vibrant, alive with color and mystery. We can only begin to understand the creatures of the deep, the origins of time, and our place within it all. Yet there remains a connection—a reflection flowing through the rivers of time.

How can it be that the wind sweeps up over the ocean causing everything to tremble in its mist? Where does it come from and where is it going? Did life start from the ocean’s depths? Is everything connected to the ocean, our breath, our spirit reflected in nature?

Having spent much of my life at the water’s edge, these paintings are inspired by my love of the ocean and my connection to its depths. As a former divemaster immersed in aquatic environments, I developed a deep reverence for the underwater world and for nature.

They touch on the relationship between man and nature and emerged through surrendering to the process, as though moving through an underwater dream. Each work begins with a tiny seed of thought. The compositions are primarily blue, evoking a sense of peace and contemplation. Texture is layered onto paper or canvas, with media woven together to create something quite marvelous.

Blending abstraction with reality my hope is to embark on a whimsical journey into the heart of nature as we observe the world in relationship to ourselves, our spirit, our life, our breath. In fantasy, nature, and dreams, a parallel universe exists within the ocean’s depths.

BIO:

Artistic Inspiration

Sheri was born in Canada and spent most of her adult life working in various countries around the world. These nomadic experiences can be seen in her artwork through her exploratory process, love for colour and nature. In 2018 she moved back to Canada, settling in the small port-side town of Gibsons BC where she continues to draw inspiration from the nature around her.

Sheri seeks to capture the essence of life, painting the rhythms that exists in nature. Abstract concepts dance together on the canvas, and she seeks balance through stillness and movement. Her paintings are a reflection of nature in its most primordial form, connecting one with emotion, movement, peace, and change. She works in acrylic, using collage, pastel, and glazes to create mixed media paintings rich in texture and atmosphere. This movement invites viewers to pause and reflect on their own connection to the unseen rhythms of life.

When not in the studio you can find her walking the local trails in the sunshine coast with her dog, working at the SPIDER Elementary school in Roberts Creek or volunteering at the local art gallery.
