FLUX AND FELINE
Kat Cearns
June 28 – July 30, 2023
Opening Reception, Saturday, July 1, 1-3pm
Art from a time of change in my life. While I created this body of work I graduated from college, separated from my husband of 10 years, and then went to Japan for a month-long artist residency. This time represents a massive flux in what my present and future will look like. I am sharing a mix of work that I think expresses those mixed experiences. My residency in Tokyo culminated in a show of work I titled, “Cat Lady.” This work as well as several other pieces in the show feature cats, anthropomorphized and enjoying their secret lives. I have always enjoyed cats but felt some embarrassment around the concept of being a “cat lady.” In this moment of flux, I’ve decided to shed that embarrassment and create what feels good to me. Cat Lady, my body of work from Tokyo, reflects that choice.

Kat Cearns is an emerging artist and illustrator based in Coombs here on Vancouver Island. Her practice is ever-growing and evolving, driven by daily inspiration and a fundamental need to create. She works in a wide range of mediums including ink, watercolour, acrylic, block printing, oil, encaustic, and more. Art has always been a way for Kat to communicate with people. As a shy individual, expressing her inner self through an art practice has been a wonderful and fulfilling way to open up to new relationships and connections. Her subjects are often animals, both in natural states and settings, as well as whimsical and fantastical scenarios. Kat aims to depict and express her feelings of awe and gratitude for the minute, often overlooked moments in life that, when added up, make every day beautiful.
