Alla Prima Oil Painting – an Art Gems Workshop with Margery Blom
– Alla Prima is an Italian phrase that translates to ‘at first attempt’, meaning a painting is completed in one sitting.
Many famous artists like Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet and Richard Schmid were masters in the art of Alla Prima painting. This technique (also called wet-on wet or au premier coup) involves painting all layers at the same time, rather then letting them dry between layers. Because of this, alla prima is perfect for plein air, or completing a painting in one sitting.
In this workshop, you will be guided step by step to complete two oil paintings in a method that is new to you, allowing a freedom that is different from the layering techniques of traditional oil painting.
