About Art Bites:
Art Bites is a fun way to try out all different kinds of art mediums without investing a lot of time and money. Our instructors are welcoming and encourage everyone to ‘just have’ fun creating art. Try something you’ve always wondered about, or take a class with a friend or family member just for fun! Our classes run from Sept-Dec in the fall and Jan-Jun in the spring. Oct 1 AM Class – Block Printing on Fabric with Margie Davidson
This class will include information about printmaking as an art form and a hands-on experience of blockprinting on cloth with textile paint.

Oct 1 PM Class – Painting Miniatures with Lynn Orriss
Miniature Painting: A painting of very small dimensions, anything represented on a greatly reduced scale. We will be working in watercolor and ink to explore creating a true miniature painting.
All supplies included
About the Instructor: Lynn Orriss’ works have been exhibited across Canada and are included in private collections around the world. She says a day doesn’t go by where she isn’t being creative.
A brilliant session creating movement, form and design using bold acrylic paint colours and abstract techniques.

Oct 15 AM Class – Gouache Painting with Gordon Wilson
A relatively obscure medium known mostly to commercial illustrators, gouache is becoming more popular due to its flexibility and forgiving nature. Gouache is similar to watercolour, but it is opaque instead of transparent. This allows the artist to create a variety of results that go beyond traditional watercolour.

About the Instructor: Gordon Wilson enjoys taking seemingly complex art styles and making them accessible and easy to learn. He has a degree in design and education and has taught in high schools for 15 years, as well as other venues. Prior to teaching Gordon was a commercial designer and illustrator for 20 years working in television, publishing, and advertising

Oct 22 AM Class – Let’s Make a Sketchbook with Deborah Nicol
This is an introduction to making your own books. We will be using watercolour paper so you can take up Urban Sketching or Pleine Aire Sketching. When you make your own sketchbook you get the custom paper you like to use!

About the Instructor: Deborah Nicol is a versatile artist who works in a variety of mediums, and primarily in Acrylics. Deb started her artistic endeavors with pencil portraits, quickly moving into Oil Pastels and Oils and expanding into landscapes and paintings of children. In recent years she has moved into Acrylics and finding her true passion in Abstract venues.

Oct 22 PM Class – Art Journaling with Watercolour Pencils – Mererilyn Laursen
Learn how to use watercolour pencils and get into art journalling. The class will receive a revised 5-page handout covering supplies needed to continue, planning a page layout and lettering suggestions, both simple and more elaborate. There will be time for using the pencils and designing a practice page.

About the Instructor: Merrilyn Laursen lives, plays, and paints in Parksville. In 2018, she started using watercolour pencils to keep an art journal of her travels and then continued to record the journey of the pandemic. It is her belief that whether it’s to record memories of travel or the impressions of a new experience, there is always something to journal.

Oct 29 AM Class – Discover Charcoal Drawing with Carol Ann Owers
Charcoal allows the artist to achieve dark values quickly and blend with ease.
This is a skill that can be transferred to other painting mediums.

About the Instructor: Carol Ann has two passions; painting and teaching art.
Her career in commercial art led Carol Ann to develop and teach two art postgraduate programs for George Brown College in Toronto. She has taught groups and private classes in various art centres and was an art instructor on cruises. Carol Ann enjoys sharing her love of art and teaches Art Bites and Art Gems classes at the MAC.

Oct 29 PM – Coloured Pencil Creations with Carol Ann Owers
Coloured pencils allow the artist to work with a drawing tool that has control and precision. You can work lightly for a soft look or with many layers and achieve the effect of oil paint.
