Let’s All Go Fly a Kite!

June 29-August 29, 2021

An historical exhibit celebrating Parksville’s KITEFEST event.

Join us at the MAC as we celebrate the history of one of Parksville’s most beloved summer events!

Kitefest is sponsored by the Parksville Lions Society and the BC Kitefliers Association, and was launched in July 2006 taking place during the community’s Beachfest events during the summer months. KITEFEST is a non-competitive kite festival and takes place in the perfect setting at the Parksville Community Park. Hundreds of visitors and kite enthusiasts come to the annual two-day event which features childrens’ kitemaking activities, teddy bear drop off, local judging and medals for fun categories, like youngest flier, silliest kite, highest kite and so on. Sadly, COVID 19 forced the cancellation of the 2020 AND 2021 Kitefest event on the beach.

Let’s Go Fly A Kite! is a historical exhibition celebrating the KITEFEST event – come and see the wonderful, colourful, amazing kites ‘flying’ in our Concert Gallery, learn about the history of kites – did you know that kites were first invented in 662 BC in China? Did you know that man-lifting kites were used for aerial reconnaissance and and radio antennas during WWI? Alexander Graham Bell invented the tetrahedral kite – the tetrahedron is theoretically the strongest, most rigid symmetrical structure that can exist in nature! SO much to learn and SO much fun! Our summer tent outdoors will feature kitemaking activities for children and families who visit our exhibit this summer.

Let’s Go Fly A Kite is at the McMillan Arts Centre from June 29 – August 29, 2021.

The Arts Centre is open Daily except on Mondays, from 11am to 3pm.

Entrance by donation.
