There is double meaning in the title of this workshop in that it refers both to Landscape painting as well as a “grounding” in the fundamentals of watercolour. Reference material will be supplied but you can bring your own as well.

·        Day #1- the nature of the watercolour medium – dealing with transparency and exploiting it to make your colour vibrant- using underpainting to shine through the pigment – layering your washes

·        Day #2 – creating darks without making mud- colour mixing, negative painting

·        Day #3- textural effects for foreground details and observation of light

·        Day #4- atmospheric effects and putting it all together- mixing subtle greys and greens – using a photo in your work – creating distance and perspective

·        You should have at least one sheet of 140lb paper cut into quarters
·        Sketch paper
·        Pencils, eraser
·        Paint—Ultramarine Blue, Thalo or (winsor blue if using Winsor & Newton), Permanent Rose, Hansa Yellow Medium or New Gamboge Yellow, Burnt Sienna
·        Palette for mixing colour
·        3 Brushes – 1 – 1”flat chisel, 1 – #6 or #7 round, and one #2 or #3 rigger
·        masking fluid
·        masking tape
·        board on which to attach your painting surface
·        rags or towels
·        spray bottle
·        bucket or container for water
