About our Monday Art Gems Program:
Monday Art Gems reflects colourful and multifaceted offering of workshops. Get ready for 4-hour workshops in Watercolours, Acrylic Painting, Relief Sculpture, Collage, and Mosaics, as well as colour theory, drawing, using a limited palette and more.
These day long workshops are geared for those who want to delve deeper into a particular art technique or medium. Our teacher artists have created classes that are engaging and welcoming, whether you’re following up an Art Bites class, or learning a new skill set to add to your art tool box.
Our classes run from Sept-Dec in the fall and Jan-Jun in the spring. Our full Monday Art Gems fall schedule is here
Sep 11 – Creative Mosaics with Debra Hagen
In this class, students will receive a brief introduction to mosaics as an art medium including common terminology and tools. Each student will have the opportunity to create a small mixed media mosaic on a wooden cradle board. All tools and supplies will be provided including the cradle board, adhesive and a wide variety of materials for creating the mosaic. Students are welcome to bring small personal items for inclusion in their mosaic (e.g. pebbles, shells, jewellery bits).
All materials provided
About the Instructor: Debra has experimented with a variety of art forms and studied with many accomplished artists, but for the past 20 years, she has focused on mosaics. During that time, she has completed a Masters in Mosaic class at Orsoni’s Glass Factory in Venice, Italy, as well as several other classes with internationally respected mosaic artists. Her mosaics are created with a wide variety of tesserae and include fine art for the wall, jewellery and outdoor mosaics. She is a member of a number of mosaic associations. She enjoys teaching and sharing her enthusiasm for mosaics with others.

Sep 18 – Fun Mixing Green: Acrylic Painting with Cindy Mawle
Green doesn’t have to be complicated.
Green can sometimes be one of the more difficult colours to wrangle in. There are SO MANY SHADES!
When you hear words like colour temperature, chroma intensity and grey green, things can get overwhelming.
In this short Art Gems class, I will show you the basic ways to mix the natural greens I use in my own work. To keep it simple but interesting we will be working with a minimal palette on you own abstract design. No boring colour charts here! (unless you really want to of course).
All materials provided.
About the Instructor: Cindy Mawle is a Vancouver Island artist who works out of her home studio surrounded by forest on the central island. Her acrylic paintings on canvas mostly depict her surrounding areas on the Canadian west coast. Her main objective in these collections of work is to express the calm and joy she experiences in each location. To find out more about the artist visit www.cindymawle.com

Sep 25 – Relief Sculpture with Joanne Purdy
In this relaxed but informative class you will learn step by step what materials, tools and unique techniques to use, for working with plaster. So you too can create a beautiful bas relief, not only in class, but at home on your own walls! This workshop is a more in-depth version of our previous Art Bites Relief Sculpture classes but previous experience is not necessary.
About the Instructor: Joanne has thirty years of experience painting, sketching and sculpting and her work is in collections throughout the world. Throughout her career Joanne has enjoyed many aspects of art including sculpting, using only the simplicity of light and shadow.
