About our Monday Art Gems Program:
Monday Art Gems reflects colourful and multifaceted offering of workshops. Get ready for 4-hour workshops in Watercolours, Acrylic Painting, Relief Sculpture, Collage, and Mosaics, as well as colour theory, drawing, using a limited palette and more.
These day long workshops are geared for those who want to delve deeper into a particular art technique or medium. Our teacher artists have created classes that are engaging and welcoming, whether you’re following up an Art Bites class, or learning a new skill set to add to your art tool box.
Our classes run from Sept-Dec in the fall and Jan-Jun in the spring. Our full Monday Art Gems fall schedule is here
Nov 6 – Watercolour Magic with Carla Flegel
Learn to use the inherited characteristics of watercolour to create beautiful paintings. Focus on the skills that are required to get watercolour to do its magic for you. We will make a simple winter wonderland scene to let us practice the wet into wet technique of watercolor. No experience required. All supplies included. Come out and see if water colour is the medium for you.
All materials provided for this class.
About the Instructor:
About the Instructor: Carla Flegel has explored oils, acrylics and has recently settled on watercolour as her medium of choice. She loves the unpredictability as water, paint and paper meet, and how it paints itself if you let it.

Nov 20 – Mixed Media Collage with Merrilyn Laursen
In this Art Gems workshop, you’ll be making your own collage papers using print-making techniques and a gel-plate, and using these papers to create a floral bouquet or an abstract design in a card format
There will be a hand-out covering supplies needed and directions for further development.
All materials provided for this class.
About the Instructor: Merrilyn Laursen is a Parksville artist who discovered the joy of collage during the pandemic. Through many online courses and inspiring instructors, she experimented with ways to use collage to add texture, pattern and contrast to her paintings. What she discovered is that the possibilities are endless and the results exciting

Nov 27 – Acrylic Painting with a Limited Palette – Gordon Wilson
There are so many colours out there, how do I choose? Using a limited colour palette can actually make it easier to start a painting. In this class we’ll start with two colours plus white to play with “depth of field” and learn how to create harmony and cohesion in a painting. By adding one or two more colours at a time, we’ll slowly expand our palette options without overwhelming our choices.
Note: this class is a great follow up to Oct 16 Decoding Colour Theory (but it is not a prerequisite)
All materials provided
About the Instructor: Gordon Wilson enjoys taking seemingly complex art styles and making them accessible and easy to learn. He has a degree in design and education and has taught in high schools for 15 years, as well as other venues. Prior to teaching Gordon was a commercial designer and illustrator for 20 years working in television, publishing, and advertising.
