About Art Bites:

Art Bites is a fun way to try out all different kinds of art mediums without investing a lot of time and money.  Our instructors are welcoming and encourage everyone to ‘just have’ fun creating art.  Try something you’ve always wondered about, or take a class with a friend or family member just for fun!  Our classes run from Sept-Dec in the fall and Jan-Jun in the spring.  Our full Art Bites Fall Schedule is available here

Ready for more?  Try our Art Foundations classes and explore techniques and mediums in a more in-depth workshop setting. No experience necessary; all supplies included.

Oct 2  AM – Telling Your Story with Marva Blackmore

Telling Your Story: Personal Storytelling with Marva Blackmore

Do you love telling your stories at family gatherings or to friends?
Would you like to learn how to tell those stories better?
How do you make them more interesting? Possibly more intriguing?
Join us for this fun morning.

Bring an idea for a story. OR
Bring a photo that has a story behind it. OR
Bring a story you like to tell but would like to improve your telling of it.

About the Instructor:  Marva K Blackmore is an editor, storyteller, and writer. She has told stories both nationally and internationally. She has delighted audiences at festivals, coffee houses and on concert stages. She leads workshops in Memoir Writing Using Storytelling Techniques. She edits fiction and memoirs for local area authors and has published three books about Memoir Writing

Oct 2 PM  Collage Cards with Merrilyn Laursen

Have fun making a card while learning the basics of collage.  All materials needed will be supplied but if you wish, you can bring your own collage materials to make your work more personal. (i.e., images, words and/or lettering from magazines, stickers, wallpaper, computer printouts of your own photos)

About the Instructor:  Merrilyn Laursen lives, plays and paints in Parksville.  And now she also adds collage to her creations.  With all those pandemic hours to fill, she took a full year of joyful art instruction under UK artist, Fiona Godfrey.  She discovered that it’s a medium with endless possibilities and is happy to share some tips and techniques in this Art Bites class

Oct 16 AM Class – Writing Flash Fiction with Debra Kuzbik

Flash Fiction is an exciting new literary genre with a small word count and a big impact.  In this workshop, you will learn how to write succinct, powerful stories that pack a punch! 

Activities will include:

  • The history of Flash Fiction
  • The characteristics, principles and structure of Flash Fiction
  • Types of Flash Fiction
  • Opportunities to listen to, write and share Flash Fiction
  • Flash Fiction prompts, starters and ideas
  • Flash Fiction contests and publishing opportunities
  • A journal, pen, an information and resource folder, and snacks will be provided

About the Instructor:  Debra is an educator, photographer and author who, along with her husband, retired to Vancouver Island nine years ago.  She enjoys gardening, yoga, traveling, art and spending time with her three adult children and grandson who, happily, all live on Vancouver Island.

Oct 16 – PM Class – Alcohol Ink with Mary Unger

We’ll experiment with different paper and different techniques so you can get a feel for this vibrant medium and you’ll take home an original piece you created.

About the Instructor:   Mary Unger was raised on the east coast of Canada and moved to BC in 1970 after six years in Montreal. She studied fine arts at Mount Allison University and took classes and workshops in Montreal, Calgary and here on Vancouver Island.

Oct 23 – AM Class – Mandalas with Judi Malcolm

With gentle mindful guidance, learn how to create a circle of beautiful patterns that speak to your heart and soul. If you can draw a flower petal or a leaf, you can draw a mandala!

About the Instructor:  Judi is a late bloomer regarding art but had explored her creative side since she was a child.  She incorporates mindfulness and nature into making mandala’s (Sanskrit for the word circle).

Oct 23 – PM Class – Painting Miniatures with Mary Unger

Miniature Painting: A painting of very small dimensions,  anything represented on a greatly reduced scale.  We will be working in watercolor and ink to explore creating a true miniature painting.

A creative and dynamic session that introduces bold, bright and colourful methods with watercolour.

About the Instructor:  Carol Ann is a professional artist and enjoys working in a wide range of mediums, and brings her experience and expertise to the classroom.
Nature in all of her beauty inspires her passion to paint. Living here on Vancouver Island, nature is only steps away to the most beautiful scenery in all of Canada. Carol Ann enjoys sharing her love of art and teaches Art Bites and Art Foundations classes at the MAC.
