About Art Bites:

Art Bites is a fun way to try out all different kinds of art mediums without investing a lot of time and money.  Our instructors are welcoming and encourage everyone to ‘just have’ fun creating art.  Try something you’ve always wondered about, or take a class with a friend or family member just for fun!  Our classes run from Sept-Dec in the fall and Jan-Jun in the spring.  Our full Art Bites Spring Schedule is available here

Jan 29  AM – Drawing with Pencil & Brush with Gordon Wilson

A fun and easy session that introduces students to create dynamic drawings using line and shades of watercolour. Instruction will include artwork examples along with demonstrations.

About the Instructor:  Gordon Wilson enjoys taking seemingly complex art styles and making them accessible and easy to learn.  He has a degree in design and education and has taught in high schools for 15 years, as well as other venues.  Prior to teaching Gordon was a commercial designer and illustrator for 20 years working in television, publishing, and advertising.

Gordon will also be teaching three other Art Bites classes this session: Ink Relief (Feb 12 AM & PM) , Gouache Painting (Feb 26 AM&PM), and Drawing Tips  & Techniques (Mar 19 AM & PM).
Gordon is also teaching these Art Foundations classes:  Dry Media Drawing (Feb 6), Wet Media Drawing (Feb 13) and Ink Relief (Apr 3).

Jan 29 PM – Zentangle with Rhonda Roy

This starter Zentangle class is a fun and relaxing way to explore the world of Zentangle.  We’ll learn some basic ‘tangles’ as well as the philosophy and method of this satisfying art form.  Anyone can create beautiful art using structured patterns, pen, and ink!

About the Instructor:  Rhonda Roy discovered Zentangle in 2015, became a Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT) in April 2016 and has been teaching Zentangle classes and creating Zentangle Inspired Art since then.  Rhonda believes we are all born with a need and an ability to create, and that Zentangle is a great way to awaken that creative side in us all. 

Feb 5 AM Class – Oil Painting with Margery Blom

An introduction to creating with non toxic, eco-friendly oil paint that will take the mystery out of this traditional, flexible and exciting medium.

About the Instructor:  Margery Blom  BFA is an oil paint artist specializing in scenes from Vancouver Island. Margery displays in galleries all over the Island and is an active member of FCA.  You can find Margery as Resident Artist at the McMillan Arts Centre on Thursdays.

Feb 5 PM  Class – Art Journaling with Watercolourl Pencils – Merrilyn Laursen

The class will have a 4-page handout covering supplies needed, planning a page layout and lettering suggestions, followed by some time for using the pencils and designing a practice page.

About the Instructor:  Merrilyn Laursen lives, plays, and paints in Parksville.  In 2018, she started using watercolour pencils to keep an art journal of her travels; she is now recording her latest journey, that of COVID19.  “There is always something to journal.”

Feb 12 AM – Ink Resist with Gordon Wilson

An unusual and exciting art form!

Ink Relief is a technique where using just ink, gouache and paper, a process is followed where the final art work develops before your eyes much like developing a traditional photograph.

Feb 12 PM – Folk Art with Mary Unger

Folk Art expresses the lives and feelings of ordinary people in communities.  Learn to tell a story in simple pictures and designs using acrylic paint on board.

About the Instructor:  Mary Unger was raised on the east coast of Canada and moved to BC in 1970 after six years in Montreal. She studied fine arts at Mount Allison University and took classes and workshops in Montreal, Calgary and here on Vancouver Island.  “Travel to Mexico, Hawaii, Hong Kong,  South Africa, and Europe has been a feast to the eyes and soul.”

Feb 19 AM – Palette Knife Painting with Deborah Nicol

A fun and creative session, using palette knife techniques and acrylics to create rich images by ‘smearing and scraping’ your paint (rather than paint brush methods), on your canvas.

About the Instructor:  Deborah Nicol is an emerging artist, working primarily in Acrylics. Deb started her artistic endeavors with pencil portraits, quickly moving into Oil Pastels and Oils and expanding into landscapes and paintings of children. In recent years she has moved into Acrylics and finding her true passion in Abstract venues.  

Feb 19 PM – Alcohol Ink Abstractions with Mary Unger

A fun and creative session, using palette knife techniques and acrylics to create rich images by ‘smearing and scraping’ your paint (rather than paint brush methods), on your canvas.

Feb 26 AM & PM – Gouache Painting with Gordon Wilson

A relatively obscure medium known mostly to commercial illustrators, gouache is becoming more popular due to its flexibility and forgiving nature.  Gouache is similar to watercolour, but it is opaque instead of transparent. This allows the artist to create a variety of results that go beyond traditional watercolour.
